The Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT launched the Manifattura Collection, a family of watches which exclusively uses 100% made in Panerai movements, such as the calibre P.2002, the first hand-wound movement created entirely at the Panerai manufacture in Neuchâtel.
With it, many innovations have been introduced: the linear indication of power reserve, the second reset, which stops the balance wheel instantaneously and returns the seconds hand to zero, thus enabling the time to be set with great precision, and the simultaneous display of the second time zone over 12 and 24 hours.
It consists of 245 parts, with 3 spring barrels and a free-sprung balance, creating a truly made at Panerai standard. Everything has been designed to optimise the performance of the movement. There is sufficient energy stored to ensure that the watch runs for a very long time without the need for daily winding. To achieve this a system was devised consisting of three spring barrels, two stacked one above the other while the third barrel carries the wheelwork of the power reserve which is displayed on the dial by a triangular marker moving along a linear scale.
The case in the Luminor 1950 style has a caseband with brushed finish and a polished bezel. Made of steel or pink gold, it is 44 mm in diameter and uses the device protecting the winding crown, which ensures the perfect water-resistance of the watch.
The black or brown sandwich-style dial has the date window at 3 o’clock, accompanied by the symmetrically placed small seconds dial. The power reserve indicator, with a triangular pointer which moves horizontally along a graduated linear scale, is at 6 o’clock, while the arrow-pointed centre hand of the second time zone is linked with the day/night division indicator, visible through the circular opening at 9 o’clock.
